CN SN: PUB LTE: Pot Users Have Been Driving For Decades

Sat, 01/27/2018 - 08:00
The StarPhoenix, 27 Jan 2018 - With legalization right around the corner we seem to be in a state of fog and confusion as to what it means. It is very strange that when pot/marijuana was illegal we didn't even look for it or test for it in drivers. Suddenly we seem to think there will be a huge increase in usage and that there is money to be made by an all out ban on a soon to be legal substance, even though impairment can't be proven or measured?

CN ON: PUB LTE: Ottawa Messing Up Legal Pot Plan

Sat, 01/27/2018 - 08:00
Ottawa Citizen, 27 Jan 2018 - I had to laugh when I saw the bit about Ottawa city planners trying to keep legal pot shops out of neighbourhoods "experiencing socio-economic stress," which I suppose is government bafflegab for "poor." How did so much animus against pot arise in the first place? It was seen as a "poor folks' drug" by rich white folks. The great and futile war on drugs was essentially a class war: The judiciary and cops were mere soldiers in that war to keep poor folks down.

CN ON: LTE: Columnist Off The Mark On Drug Legalization

Sat, 01/27/2018 - 08:00
The Chatham Daily News, 27 Jan 2018 - After reading the column written by Tyler Dawson on why it's time to legalize all drugs, I couldn't help butt my head as to why he would even suggest such a dangerous and ill thought-out plan. I myself am opposed to these so-called "safe" injection sites. Sure, it will save people from overdosing on heroin, but it also enables those to go out and do it all over again and again.

He stated, "The entire reason for this (marijuana) legalization is money and nothing else." That's a very non-researched and inaccurate assumption.

Fri, 01/26/2018 - 08:00
Globe and Mail, 26 Jan 2018 - Bank of Montreal is open to more deals with cannabis companies, as long as those firms can get past "traps" in the lender's due-diligence process, chief executive Darryl White said. The Toronto-based lender became the first major Canadian bank to arrange a stock sale for a company tied to cannabis this month when its capital-markets unit helped lead a $200.7-million equity financing for Canopy Growth Corp. In his first public comments about the deal, Mr. White called the marijuana producer "a bona fide business operating within the boundaries of the law."

CN ON: Editorial: Stop The Smoke

Wed, 01/24/2018 - 08:00
Toronto Star, 24 Jan 2018 - It's tough to imagine a situation where it would be fair for a landlord to change a tenant's lease mid-term. But the impending legalization of pot consumption this summer is one. Ontario landlords are understandably concerned that recreational users may smoke weed in their units once it's legal, leading to a deluge of complaints from other tenants when the fumes inevitably end up in their suites.

CN NF: Editorial: Weeding Out Weed

Wed, 01/24/2018 - 08:00
The Telegram, 24 Jan 2018 - It's just another example of how complicated things are going to be as provinces roll out their marijuana rules. Several provinces - Newfoundland and Labrador among them - have decided that marijuana smoking has to be done on private property. Ontario's rules are so tight that weed smoking has to take place in private residences. But what happens if your private residence is an apartment?

The Morning Star, 24 Jan 2018 - The City of Vernon, said Coun. Dalvir Nahal to the overflow crowd of more than 70 people who crammed into Vernon council chambers Monday, has a responsibility to taxpayers, business owners and children to make sure what the city is doing in regards to marijuana dispensaries is being done. The city held a public hearing Monday on a zoning text amendment bylaw that is not intended to close down dispensaries that were in operation before Nov. 14, 2017. The bylaw is to bridge the process that will allow dispensaries to continue to operate provided certain conditions are met.

CN BC: LTE: Get Tougher On Drug Suppliers

Tue, 01/23/2018 - 08:00
Penticton Herald, 23 Jan 2018 - Dear editor: When is enough enough? Twelve years ago my wife and I decided that we wanted to move to the Okanagan. After a lot of thought and visits, we chose Penticton. What an absolutely wonderful place: sunshine, beaches, festivals, sports and if you stayed all winter very bearable But what has been happening is more break-ins, both on the personal level as well as businesses, thefts are a regular occurrence (the police know who most of these criminals are, it's mostly drug related) resulting in more and more fear amongst good honest citizens.

Globe and Mail, 23 Jan 2018 - Ontario landlords want the right to immediately ban the use of pot in rental properties when recreational marijuana is legalized this summer, arguing they should be allowed to change tenants' existing leases to stop the drug from being consumed in their units. Some marijuana users say, however, that the situation would leave renters with few places to legally use weed, given the province's already restrictive rules around the drug.
